Wrap vs Paint vs PPF
Three ways to change or protect a finish, and each one does a different job. A wrap changes the color or carries graphics. Paint replaces the finish for good. PPF is clear film that takes the hits so your paint doesn't.

Good to know
Before you decide
Can you wrap over bad paint?
Vinyl follows the surface under it. Peeling clear coat, rust and deep chips show through, and loose paint can come off with the film later. Fix those first, then wrap. Problems with the surface underneath also fall outside our install warranty, so we'll point them out before we quote.
Can you combine them?
Yes. Some owners wrap the car for color, then add PPF on high-impact areas like the front bumper and hood. Ask us what makes sense for your car and how you drive it.
Leases, insurance and the DOL
Leased car? Read the lease first and plan to remove the wrap before you turn the car in. In Washington, wrapping a personal vehicle is generally fine. Let your insurer know, and check with the Washington State Department of Licensing about the color on your vehicle record.

FAQ
Wrap vs paint FAQ
Is it cheaper to wrap or paint a car?
It depends on the car and the shop. At Ardor, full car wraps start from $3,000, and cars typically run $3,000-$5,000. Paint prices swing widely with prep and paint quality, so get a body-shop quote and compare both in our ROI Lab.
Does a car wrap damage paint?
On healthy factory paint, a wrap comes off cleanly when it's removed following 3M's guidelines. Paint that has been resprayed or touched up can lift with the film. We check the paint and tell you about any risk before we quote.
What's the difference between PPF and a vinyl wrap?
Vinyl changes the color or carries graphics. PPF is clear film made for protection. 3M's paint protection film is polyurethane with a self-healing top coat, and it's two to three times as thick as color-change vinyl.
How long do car wraps last?
Printed wraps typically last 5 to 7 years with proper care. Vertical surfaces can reach up to 8 years. Hoods and roofs usually last about 3.
Does a wrap protect the paint underneath?
It shields paint from light scratches, UV and road grime while it's on. It won't stop a rock chip the way PPF can, and it doesn't replace clear coat or a ceramic coating.
Can I wrap a leased car?
Usually, yes. Check your lease first, then plan to remove the wrap before you return the car.
Can I take a wrapped car through a car wash?
Use a hand wash or a touchless wash, and wait 72 hours after install before the first wash. Skip brush washes and keep pressure washers away from the edges.
