Wrap Academy / Module 02
Car Wrap Vinyl Types: Films, Finishes and Brands
Wrap shops say "vinyl" for many different products. They differ in how they're made, how far they stretch, how long they last and what they cost. Here's how to tell them apart.
Every wrap film starts with two choices. First, how the film is made: cast or calendered. Second, whether it gets printed or comes already colored. After that come the finish, any specialty film, and the brand.
One warning before the numbers: durability ratings don't compare cleanly across brands. Each maker tests in its own climate zone, on vertical or horizontal surfaces, printed or unprinted, and some numbers are warranties while others are expected life. We list the basis next to every rating so you can compare fairly.

Cast vs calendered vinyl
This is the biggest split in wrap film. Both are PVC. The difference is how the sheet is formed, and that decides how well it stretches and how much it fights to shrink back.
| Attribute | Cast | Calendered |
|---|---|---|
| How it's made | A liquid PVC mix is poured onto a moving casting sheet, then run through ovens that drive off the solvent. | Heated PVC compound is forced through temperature-controlled rollers that squeeze it into a sheet. |
| Built-in stress | Very low. The film forms without being stretched. | Rolling leaves stress in the film, so it tries to shrink back (memory) when heated or as it ages. |
| Print film thickness | About 2 mil (50 µm): 3M IJ180C, Avery MPI 1105. | 2.75-3.1 mil (70-80 µm): ORAFOL ORAJET 3651, Avery MPI 2105. |
| Conformability | Best. Handles compound curves, rivets, corrugations and deep recesses. ORAFOL says cast film can be heated and deep-drawn. | Flat or gently curved surfaces. ORAFOL says not to heat-form it into deep corrugations. |
| Shrinkage on the data sheet | 0.1-0.4 mm in the FINAT shrink test (3M IJ180C 0.1 mm; Avery MPI 1105 0.4 mm max). | Avery MPI 2105 under 0.508 mm (0.02 in), and higher with ink loads above 250%. ORAJET 3651 under 0.016 in. |
| Rated durability | Up to 10 years unprinted on vertical surfaces (Avery MPI 1105, Central Europe; 3M IJ180 expected performance life). | 5-6 years unprinted on vertical surfaces (ORAJET 3651, MPI 2105); up to 5 years printed (MPI 2105). |
| Cost | Higher. | Lower. |
| Typical uses | Full printed wraps, color change, fleet graphics on vans and cars with curves. | Flat box-truck sides, flat panels, cut lettering, signs, wall and window graphics. |
| Install | Needs post-heat to lock into recesses. | Stiffer, which makes it easier to handle on big flat panels. |
Bottom line: Manufacturer guidance boils down to one rule: if the surface has compound curves, rivets or deep recesses, use cast. Calendered film can make sense on flat box-truck sides and lettering, where its lower price helps and it won't be asked to stretch.
Shrink tests and climate zones differ between makers, so compare numbers within one brand where you can.
Plasticizers
Polymeric vs monomeric vinyl
Plasticizer is the additive that makes PVC flexible. It comes in two types, and it's a separate choice from cast or calendered. A calendered film can be either one.
Monomeric. Small, mobile plasticizer molecules that migrate to the surface over time. The film shrinks and turns brittle as they leave. Avery's PVC films brochure puts monomeric outdoor film at up to about 2 years. Short-term promotional graphics. Not vehicles. [22]
Polymeric. Long-chain plasticizer molecules that stay put. Better printability, durability, UV and heat resistance. The same brochure puts polymeric outdoor white film at up to about 7 years. These are the intermediate and high-performance calendered grades. Longer-term calendered graphics on flat surfaces. [22]
Wrap-grade cast films are commonly described as polymeric, but Avery's data sheets for its cast wrap films don't state the plasticizer type. The brochure above comes from Avery's label-film division, not its wrap-film division.

Non-PVC options
PVC-free and polyurethane films
3M's bulletin describes Envision Print Wrap Film SV480mC and LX480mC as a non-vinyl composite, non-PVC film. On paper it looks like cast print film: 50 µm thick, 80-100 µm with adhesive. 3M rates the white film at 11 years unprinted on vertical surfaces in Northern Europe in the bulletin, and 12 years in its brochure, and recommends it for vehicle wraps, trucks and trailers.
Paint protection film is also PVC-free. 3M's Protection Wrap Film is polyurethane.
We haven't reviewed PVC-free wrap films from Avery Dennison, ORAFOL, Arlon or Hexis yet. If PVC-free matters to you, ask us and we'll check the current options and their ink and laminate requirements.
Pros
- No PVC and no plasticizers
Cons
- Premium price
- Fewer options
- Check the bulletin for ink and laminate compatibility
Color change
Color-change finishes
Color-change film comes in a range of finishes. Most are offered across the big brands: 3M 2080, Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film (SW900), ORAFOL 970RA, Arlon PCC and Hexis HX20000. Printed wraps get their finish from the laminate instead.
Finish
Gloss and high gloss
The closest look to fresh paint.
Gloss film reflects like a new clear coat. Avery rates its SW900 gloss colors at 60 gloss units or more, measured at a 20° angle.
Gloss and high-gloss 3M 2080 colors ship with a clear cap film that protects the surface during install. The installer peels it off before post-heating. 3M also puts its high-gloss colors on a polyester liner so the adhesive side stays flat under the mirror-smooth face.
On printed wraps, a gloss laminate does the same job. Avery's DOL 1460Z gloss laminate measures 70 gloss units at 20°.
Care: Hand wash or touchless wash. Standard wrap care applies.
At Ardor: Ardor describes gloss as the closest look to fresh paint.
Finish
Satin
A soft sheen between gloss and matte that shows off body lines.
Satin sits between gloss and matte. It has enough sheen to trace the car's body lines without the mirror reflections of gloss.
3M 2080, Avery SW900 and Arlon PCC all offer satin. Avery describes SW900's range as very high gloss, satin and matte paint-like finishes. Hexis offers matt, satin, glossy and wet looks.
Printed wraps can get a similar look from a luster laminate: Avery DOL 1470Z measures 30 gloss units at 60°, and 3M sells 8549L luster.
Care: No wax and no polish. Hand wash with mild soap and a microfiber mitt.
From the shop: Ardor has taken a white Ford F-250 to satin black with Avery Dennison film for a Bothell customer.
Finish
Matte
Flat, low reflection, and the finish that needs the gentlest washing.
Matte film kills reflections for a flat, modern look. Matte black is one of the most searched wrap looks: "matte black car wrap" gets about 3,600 US searches a month in Semrush data.
Every major color-change line includes matte. For printed wraps, Avery's DOL 1480Z matte laminate measures 20 gloss units at 80°, and 3M sells 8520 and 8550M matte laminates.
Matte asks more of the installer too. Hexis caps the heat gun at 90°C (194°F) on its matt films to reduce marks.
Care: Matte needs the most careful cleaning. ORAFOL says matte and structured films need extra care when washing, and Ardor's guidance is gentle hand washing with no wax and no polish.
Finish
Metallic and pearl
Shimmer that changes with the light, with shorter rated life than standard colors.
Metallic and pearl films add sparkle and depth. They trade some durability and stretch for it.
Rated life is shorter across the board. Avery rates SW900 metallic and pearl colors at 5 years against 10-12 for standard colors. ORAFOL rates 970RA metallics at 5 years and some pearls and reds at 3. Hexis rates metallics at 4 years against 5 for colors.
They also stretch less. ORAFOL lists 970RA metallics at 120% or more elongation against 150% for standard colors; Arlon lists 100% against 150%.
Care: Standard wrap care. Ask for the exact film's rating before you choose.
From the shop: Ardor has wrapped a Bentley Continental GT in 3M matte metallic pine green.
Finish
Chrome
A true mirror finish. The most dramatic film, and the most demanding one.
Chrome film turns a car into a rolling mirror. It shows up on full show-car wraps and on smaller accents.
None of the manufacturer data sheets we reviewed cover chrome film, so we don't quote a lifespan here. The industry rule of thumb: mirror-chrome films are metallized and thinner, stretch less, and carry shorter ratings than standard colors, which makes chrome the hardest film to install well. Check the data sheet for the exact film before you commit.
Chrome has its own place in wrap history. Jalopnik, citing ESPN, reports that Darrell Waltrip's chrome car in 1997 was NASCAR's first full wrap.
Don't confuse a chrome wrap with a chrome delete, which covers a car's bright trim with film. Ardor offers chrome delete as a color change add-on.
Care: Hand wash gently. Avoid brush washes and harsh chemicals, as with any wrap.
Cost: Chrome costs more than standard colors. Ardor quotes it as an upgrade over a standard color change.
Finish
Color shift
Film that changes color as you walk around the car.
Color-shift film, also called flip, chameleon or iridescent, shows different colors at different viewing angles. The effect comes from layered pigment flakes.
3M 2080 includes color flip finishes. ORAFOL's 970RA family has Premium Shift Effect Cast in gloss and matte, plus Premium Special Effect Cast for candy and intense metallic looks. KPMF is known for iridescent and color-shifting shades.
The shift and special-effect lines aren't rated separately in the data we reviewed. Metallic and pearl ratings in the same product lines run shorter than standard colors, so ask for the specific film's rating.
Care: Standard wrap care.
Cost: Like chrome, color-shift film is quoted as an upgrade over standard colors.
At Ardor: Ardor calls color shift the most eye-catching option it installs.
Finish
Carbon fiber and other textures
The woven look of carbon fiber, or a brushed-metal grain, in a film you can apply and remove.
Carbon fiber wrap gives a panel the woven look of carbon fiber composite. Common spots are hoods, roofs and accents, though a whole car can be done.
There are two ways to get the look. The first is a textured color-change film, such as 3M 2080's carbon-look finishes or ORAFOL's Premium Structure Cast line. The second is a printed carbon pattern under a textured laminate: 3M's 8900-CF100 carbon fiber overlaminate is 3.5 mil thick and adds a raised weave on top of the print. Because that pattern is printed, it can sit alongside other printed graphics on the same panel.
Textured films need a lighter hand on install. ORAFOL says not to stretch its structure films too much, to work them into recesses and to overlap at the edges.
Brushed metal is the other popular texture. 3M 2080 offers brushed aluminum (BR120), and 3M's 8900-BR100 brushed laminate is 2.5 mil.
Care: ORAFOL says structured films need more careful cleaning. Hand wash, no brushes.
Durability: Carbon-look films aren't rated separately in the data we reviewed. 3M's Japan bulletin rates brushed aluminum and matte silver at about 1 year on vertical surfaces there; ratings differ by region, so ask for the one that applies to your film.
At Ardor: Ardor installs carbon fiber and brushed finishes as part of its color change work.

Specialty film
Perforated window film (one-way vision)
Graphics on the outside of a window, with a view out from inside.
The film is printed on its white face and punched with tiny holes. A black backing on the adhesive side lets people inside see out while people outside see the graphic.
Avery's MPI 7000 series is a 180 µm white calendered film with a black back, 210 µm with adhesive, with 1.6 mm holes and 40% open area. Avery rates it at 3 years (MPI 7201) or 2 years (MPI 7301) on vertical surfaces, for flat glass only, with a DOL 4000 or 4100 laminate. Resellers also list 50/50 and 70/30 versions; more open area means an easier view out and a less dense image.
3M says not to heat perforated film directly. Rules on which windows can be covered vary by state, so check Washington's current rules before covering any window.
Pros
- Full-window graphics with a view out
Cons
- Reduced visibility at night
- Lower image density
- Shorter life than body film
- Must be applied dry
- Edges need sealing
Specialty film
Reflective and conspicuity film
Film that sends headlight beams back to the driver, for safety markings and night visibility.
3M Diamond Grade Conspicuity Markings Series 983 uses microprismatic lenses sealed in clear resin. It's marked DOT-C2, and 3M says it meets or exceeds FMVSS 108 when applied as its bulletin specifies.
It comes in red-and-white and solid patterns, is rated about 10 years, and is 0.014-0.018 inch thick. 3M says to apply it on vertical surfaces (within 20°), cut around rivets, and install at 50°F (10°C) or warmer. It isn't made to stretch over curves.
At Ardor: Ardor installs 3M reflective graphics on emergency, utility and service vehicles.
Paint protection film vs vinyl wrap
PPF and vinyl solve different problems. Vinyl changes color or carries graphics. PPF protects paint from chips and scratches and is usually clear.
| Attribute | Paint protection film (PPF) | Vinyl wrap |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Polyurethane with a self-healing top coat (3M Protection Wrap Film). | PVC film, cast for wraps. |
| Thickness | 7.5-9 mil with adhesive (3M). | About 3-4.5 mil for color-change film with adhesive. |
| Job | Impact, chip and scratch protection on bumpers, hoods and fenders. | Color change, graphics and advertising. |
| Look | Usually clear. Colored PPF also exists. | Any color, finish or printed design. |
| Self-healing | Yes. Light scratches disappear with heat. | No. |
| Install | A wet install with slip solution is common (industry rule of thumb). | Dry install on air-release films; 3M specifies dry application only for IJ180C. |
| Example rating | 3M: 10-year consumer warranty. | Varies by film and basis; see the tables above. |

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between cast and calendered vinyl?
Cast vinyl is poured as a liquid and baked into a thin film with almost no built-in stress, so it stretches into curves and stays put. Calendered vinyl is rolled into a sheet, keeps some stress, and tends to shrink back. Cast suits full wraps; calendered suits flat surfaces.
What is the best vinyl for wrapping a car?
For a full wrap, use a premium cast wrap film from a major maker, such as 3M 2080 or Avery Dennison SW900 for color change, or 3M IJ180mC or Avery MPI 1105 with a matching laminate for printed wraps. The best choice depends on finish, color and budget.
Is 3M 2080 or Avery SW900 better?
Both are premium cast color-change films with air-release adhesive, and Ardor installs both. 3M 2080 is 3.5 mil (M12) and puts a cap film on gloss colors; SW900 is an 80 µm dual-layer film. Most people choose by the exact color and finish they want.
What is a carbon fiber wrap?
It's film that copies the woven look of carbon fiber. You can get it as a textured color-change film, like 3M 2080 carbon-look, or as a printed carbon pattern under a textured laminate such as 3M 8900-CF100. Hoods, roofs and accents are common spots.
Do chrome wraps last as long as regular colors?
Usually not. None of the data sheets we reviewed cover chrome, but the industry rule of thumb is that chrome is thinner, stretches less and carries a shorter rating. Metallic and pearl films, which are rated, run 3 to 5 years against 10 or more for standard colors.
Is matte or satin wrap harder to take care of?
Matte needs the most care. ORAFOL says matte and structured films need more careful cleaning. Both matte and satin should be hand washed with mild soap, with no wax and no polish.
What is the difference between PPF and a vinyl wrap?
PPF is a thick, usually clear polyurethane film (7.5 to 9 mil for 3M's) with a self-healing top coat that protects paint from chips. Vinyl wrap is thinner PVC film used to change color or add graphics. You can put PPF over a wrap.
What is perforated window film?
It's printed film full of tiny holes with a black backing. People outside see the graphic and people inside can still see out. Avery's MPI 7000 has 40% open area and is rated 2 to 3 years. Check state window rules before covering any glass.
