How Car Wrap Film Is Made & Printed

A printed wrap is five thin layers, each with its own job. Here is what every layer does, how thick it is, and how a shop turns a roll of white film into a finished vehicle.

A printed vehicle wrap is a stack of films and adhesive. Without its backing paper, the whole stack is roughly 130 micrometers thick, about 5 mil. That figure comes from adding up manufacturer data sheets for a common film and laminate pair.

There are two kinds of wrap film. Printed wraps start as white film that gets printed, dried and covered with a clear laminate. Color-change wraps come off the roll already colored, with the finish built into the film, so there is no ink and usually no laminate.

Below we take both apart layer by layer, then walk through the nine steps a shop follows to print and install one. Specs on this page come from manufacturer data sheets, bulletins and guides, listed in the sources at the bottom. The one industry rule of thumb is labeled as one.

Units

Mil, microns and degrees

1 mil = 0.001 inch = 25.4 micrometers (µm). Where a data sheet gives only microns, we converted to mil. Temperatures are given in both °F and °C; data sheets mostly use °C.

The printed wrap stack, top to bottom

Think of a printed wrap as five layers. The top two protect and carry the image. The middle one gives the stretch. The bottom two hold it to the vehicle and protect the adhesive until install day. Tap a layer to isolate it.

Overlaminate

Clear cast film. Sets the finish, blocks UV and scratches.

A clear film with its own adhesive, rolled over the print. It sets the finish (gloss, luster, satin or matte), blocks UV and scratches from reaching the ink, and shields the print from washing and chemicals.

Materials: Clear cast PVC with a clear acrylic adhesive. UV protection is built into the film; Avery says its DOL 1400 laminates protect against UV radiation. A cast laminate goes over cast film so the two stretch together.

Thickness: 30-50 µm (1.2-2.0 mil). Avery DOL 1460Z has a 30 µm clear cast face film and measures 50 µm with its adhesive. 3M lists its standard wrap overlaminates at 2 mil.

What can go wrong: Laminating before solvent ink has finished drying traps solvent under the laminate. Avery warns this shows up later as bubbles, tunnels or lifting. A laminate that stretches differently from the film under it can also lift out of recesses.

Laminate pairings:

  • Avery MPI 1105 film: DOL 1460Z gloss or DOL 1480Z matte laminate
  • 3M IJ180mC film: Scotchcal 8518 gloss, 8520 matte; Envision 8548G gloss, 8549L luster, 8550M matte; or the 8900 series

Fact The laminate can add real texture. 3M sells a carbon fiber overlaminate, 8900-CF100, that is 3.5 mil thick and puts a raised weave over a printed carbon pattern. Its brushed version, 8900-BR100, is 2.5 mil.

Stack total: About 130 µm (5.1 mil) without the liner. Avery MPI 1105 (80 µm film and adhesive) plus DOL 1460Z (50 µm laminate and adhesive) comes to about 130 µm, plus a thin ink layer. 3M IJ180Cv3 (80-100 µm) plus a 2 mil 3M laminate comes to about 130-150 µm. We added the manufacturer numbers; neither company publishes a combined figure.

The ink layer is drawn thicker than scale so it can be seen.

Wrap Academy · Color-change film

The color-change film stack

Color-change film skips the ink and, normally, the laminate. The color, effect flakes and surface texture are built into a multi-layer cast film: a clear top layer for depth and gloss over one or more pigmented layers. It's thicker than print film, 3.0 to 4.5 mil, which helps with opacity and a paint-like look, and it still stretches well.

Protective cap film (gloss and high-gloss 3M 2080 only)

Temporary scratch guard. Removed before post-heat.

A temporary clear film that prevents scratches during install. The installer peels it off before post-heating to reveal the finished gloss surface.

Thickness: Not published. 3M's 2080 bulletin describes the layer but doesn't give its thickness.

Total: About 3.0-4.5 mil with adhesive. Manufacturers don't publish the thickness of the clear and pigment layers inside color-change film, so we show the film as one layer.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is car wrap vinyl made of?

Most wrap film is PVC (vinyl) made flexible with plasticizers. Wrap-grade film is usually cast: poured as a liquid and baked in ovens. It carries an acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive and a silicone-coated paper liner. Some films are PVC-free, like 3M Envision 480mC, and paint protection film is polyurethane.

How thick is a car wrap?

A printed wrap is about 5 mil (130 µm) without its liner: roughly 2 mil of cast film, a thin ink layer, adhesive, and a 2 mil laminate. Color-change film is 3.0 to 4.5 mil including adhesive, depending on brand.

Why do printed wraps need a laminate?

The laminate protects the ink. It blocks UV and abrasion, shields the print from washing and chemicals, and sets the finish: gloss, luster, satin or matte. Wrap laminate is cast film, so it stretches with the printed film underneath.

What is outgassing in wrap printing?

Outgassing is solvent escaping from fresh solvent or eco-solvent ink. It has to finish before the print is laminated or cut. Avery calls for at least 72 hours for vehicle graphics and 96 hours for solid dark colors. HP says latex prints can skip it.

Why do installers heat the vinyl after it's installed?

Stretched film stores tension and wants to shrink back. Post-heating brings recesses, curves and edges to the film's set temperature, roughly 85 to 120°C (185 to 248°F) depending on the film, so it stays put. Without it, edges can lift.

What are air-release channels?

They are tiny channels in the adhesive, usually formed by an embossed liner, that let trapped air escape to the edge of the film. 3M calls its version Comply, Avery uses Easy Apply RS, and ORAFOL uses RapidAir.

Is color-change wrap printed?

No. Color-change film comes off the roll already colored, with the finish built into a multi-layer cast film. There's no ink layer and normally no laminate. Gloss and high-gloss 3M 2080 colors ship with a clear cap film that comes off before post-heating.

What kind of ink is used to print car wraps?

Shops use eco-solvent or solvent ink, latex ink, or UV-curable ink. Solvent inks need 24 to 96 hours to dry before lamination. Latex comes out of the printer dry. Standard UV ink is rigid, so only flexible UV inks are approved for curves.
