Quick answer

The short answer

Most professionally installed wraps last 5 to 7 years with good care. Sides and other vertical panels can reach about 8 years. Hoods and roofs face the sun and last about 3. Manufacturer ratings run higher, up to 10 to 12 years, but those numbers are for unprinted film on vertical surfaces in a test climate.

The 5-to-7, 8 and 3 year figures are Ardor Printing's own guidance. Manufacturer figures are in the table below.

Manufacturer ratings

What the film makers rate

Every number below comes from a data sheet or bulletin, with its basis. Makers test in different climates and on different surfaces, and some numbers are warranties while others are expected life, so compare with care.

The pattern: Notice the pattern: the long numbers are for unprinted film on vertical panels. Printing, horizontal surfaces, hot exposure and specialty finishes all bring the number down.

What affects wrap life

What decides how long your wrap lasts

  • Vertical vs horizontal surfaces

Data sheet ratings assume vertical panels. Hoods, roofs and trunk lids face the sky and take the most sun and heat. Avery says its ratings drop for south-facing, hot, polluted and high-altitude exposure, and 3M says a horizontal IJ180 wrap can be warranted only with specific overlaminates (8528, 8548G, 8549L or the 8900 series). Ardor's guidance: up to about 8 years on vertical surfaces, about 3 years on hoods and roofs.

  • Printed vs color change

A printed wrap's life depends on the film, the ink and the laminate together; Avery rates its MPI 2105 film a year shorter printed than unprinted, and its DOL 1400 laminate at 6 years vertical. Color-change film has the color built in, and standard colors carry the longest ratings in each line. Metallic, pearl and specialty finishes are rated shorter.

  • The right film for the job

Cast film holds its shape on curves. Calendered film keeps stress from manufacturing and tries to shrink back, so on curves and recesses it lifts sooner. Economy monomeric film shrinks and turns brittle fastest; Avery's PVC films brochure puts its outdoor life at up to about 2 years.

    Sources: [18] [19] [21]

  • How it was printed and installed

Laminating or cutting a solvent print before it outgasses traps solvent and leads to bubbles, tunnels and edge curl later. Skipping post-heat on stretched areas leaves film that wants to pull back out of recesses and lift at the edges.

  • The paint underneath

Film bonds to whatever is under it. Peeling clear coat, rust and earlier body repairs can fail under a wrap, which is why Ardor's warranty excludes problems with the underlying surface. ORAFOL's guidelines call for professionally done, fully cured paint.

  • How it's washed

Brush washes, close-range pressure washing and harsh chemicals shorten a wrap's life. Ardor's warranty doesn't cover damage from them, and ORAFOL warns against aggressive solvents such as acetone and paint thinner.

Puget Sound

Wraps in Pacific Northwest weather

Puget Sound weather is hard on wraps in its own way. Here's what matters and what doesn't.

Rain on a cured wrap. Wrap film is rated for outdoor exposure, so normal rain on a cured wrap is part of the job. The risk window is the first few days: ORAFOL says optimum adhesion takes about 3 days, and Ardor asks customers to wait 72 hours before the first wash. [1] [21]

Cold, damp install days. Films have minimum application temperatures (Avery: 50°F; 3M 2080: 64-75°F), and 3M says the surface must stay above the dew point. HP recommends keeping a freshly wrapped vehicle indoors overnight in cold weather so it cools slowly. Ardor wraps vehicles indoors at its Snohomish shop. [2] [8] [10] [12] [24]

Summer sun on hoods and roofs. Heat and direct sun shorten film life; Avery lowers its ratings for hot and south-facing exposure. Both hit horizontal panels hardest, and a garage or shade cuts that exposure. Ardor's guidance for color change in the Northwest is 5 to 7 years with proper care. [2] [5] [12]

Road grime and winter washing. Wet months mean more road film and more washing, so the washing method matters. Stick to the care routine below. [1] [4]

Care routine

How to wash and care for a wrapped car

  1. Step 1

Wait 72 hours before the first wash

The adhesive needs time to reach full bond. ORAFOL puts optimum adhesion at about 3 days.

    Sources: [1] [21]

  2. Step 2

    Hand wash with mild soap

Use a mild soap and a microfiber mitt. This is the safest way to clean any wrap.

    Sources: [2] [3]

  3. Step 3

    Touchless or brushless washes only

If you use a car wash, choose touchless or brushless, and skip the hot-wax cycle. Avoid brush washes.

    Sources: [1] [4] [21]

  4. Step 4

Keep pressure washers off the edges

Avoid pressure washing where you can. If you use one, stay well back and never aim the spray at an edge or seam. Ask us for the care sheet for your specific film.

    Sources: [4] [21]

  5. Step 5

    No harsh solvents

Skip acetone, paint thinner and other aggressive solvents. Wipe off fuel drips soon; Avery doesn't recommend prolonged contact with gasoline.

    Sources: [14] [21]

  6. Step 6

Go extra gentle on matte, satin and textured film

No wax and no polish on matte or satin. ORAFOL says matte and structured films need more careful cleaning.

    Sources: [2] [21]

  7. Step 7

Ask before sealants or ceramic coatings

ORAFOL recommends its own ORACAL Long-Lasting Seal right after wrapping. The documents we reviewed don't cover ceramic coatings on wrap film, so ask us before applying any coating and we'll check it against your film maker's guidance.

    Source: [21]

  8. Step 8

Check the edges now and then

Look for lifting edges after washing. ORAFOL says small bubbles under about 5 mm can disappear on their own within days to 3 weeks. Anything else, send us a photo: Ardor's installation warranty runs one year, and a field installer reviews issues within 24 hours.

Replacement

Signs it's time to remove or replace a wrap

  • Fading, especially on the hood and roof. Horizontal panels fade first, and Ardor's warranty treats fading there as normal wear. [3] [4]
  • Cracking. Film that cracks has reached the end of its life. Low-grade films crack sooner. [3] [19]
  • Edges lifting or shrinking back. Film that pulls back from edges and recesses leaves bare paint showing at the edges. [19] [25]
  • Brittle or chipping film. As plasticizer leaves the film over time, the film shrinks and turns brittle. [19]
  • Past its rated life. Films are designed to come off cleanly within a window. ORAFOL, for example, rates 970RA as removable with heat for up to about 4 years. Past that window, the maker no longer specifies clean removal. [20]
  • A new look or a rebrand. New logo, new phone number, new color. We can quote removal and the new wrap together.

Removal

Removing a car wrap

Wrap film is built to come off. Avery describes MPI 1105's adhesive as having clean long-term removability, and ORAFOL rates 970RA as removable with heat for up to about 4 years.

Removal uses heat to soften the adhesive so the film releases from the paint. On healthy original paint, a wrap removed by 3M's guidelines comes off without paint damage. Repainted panels and failing clear coat can lift with the film, so we point that out when we quote.

Ardor Printing removes wraps starting from $500, and can quote a replacement wrap at the same time.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does a car wrap last?

Most professionally installed wraps last 5 to 7 years with good care. Vertical panels can reach about 8 years, while hoods and roofs last about 3. Manufacturer ratings run up to 10 to 12 years for unprinted film on vertical surfaces.

Can you take a wrapped car through a car wash?

Yes, if it's a touchless or brushless wash and you skip the hot-wax cycle. Avoid brush washes. Hand washing with mild soap and a microfiber mitt is the safest option.

Can you pressure wash a vehicle wrap?

Avoid it where you can. If you use a pressure washer, stay well back and never aim the spray at an edge or seam. Damage from close-range pressure washing isn't covered under Ardor's warranty.

How soon can I wash my car after it's wrapped?

Wait 72 hours. The adhesive needs about 3 days to reach full bond, according to ORAFOL's guidelines.

Can I wax or ceramic coat a vinyl wrap?

Never wax or polish matte or satin film, and skip hot-wax car wash cycles on any wrap. ORAFOL offers a sealant made for its films. Ask us before applying a ceramic coating so we can check it against your film maker's guidance.

Does rain hurt a car wrap?

Not once it's cured. Wrap film is rated for outdoor use. The first 72 hours matter most, so keep the car out of the wash until the adhesive reaches full bond.

Does a car wrap damage paint?

Not on healthy original paint when it's removed properly with heat. Repainted panels, peeling clear coat or rust can lift with the film, and we flag that when we quote.

How much does it cost to remove a car wrap?

At Ardor Printing, wrap removal starts from $500. Send us photos of the vehicle for a free quote.
