44 terms, A to Z

Wrap shops have their own vocabulary. You'll hear about cast film, post-heat and outgassing in a quote conversation, and it helps to know what they mean.

Definitions marked "installer term" describe common shop practice that isn't covered in a manufacturer document. Ardor definitions describe how Ardor Printing uses a term in its quotes.

Air-release channels

Tiny channels in a wrap film's adhesive that let trapped air escape to the edge of the film, so it goes on without bubbles. Also called air egress. Brand names include 3M Comply, Avery Easy Apply RS, ORAFOL RapidAir and Hexis HEX'PRESS.

Application temperature

The temperature range a film can be installed in. 3M lists 64-75°F (18-24°C) for 2080; Avery sets a 50°F (10°C) minimum for MPI 1105. The surface also has to stay above the dew point so no moisture forms under the film.

Bleed

Extra printed image that runs past a panel's trim line, so the edge can wrap into a door jamb or under trim without showing white film.

Terms starting with C

Calendered film

Vinyl made by squeezing heated PVC compound between rollers. It's thicker and stiffer than cast film and keeps some stress from the rollers, so it's used for flat or gently curved surfaces.

Cap film

A clear protective film on gloss and high-gloss 3M 2080 colors that guards against scratches during install. It's peeled off before post-heating.

Cast film

Vinyl made by pouring a liquid PVC mix onto a casting sheet and baking off the solvent in ovens. It forms with almost no built-in stress, so it's thin (about 2 mil for print film) and conforms to curves, rivets and recesses.

Color-change wrap

A wrap made from unprinted film with the color and finish built in. There's no ink layer and usually no laminate. Color-change film is about 3.0-4.5 mil thick with adhesive.

Conformability

How well a film stretches into curves and recesses without tearing or lifting. Cast film is the most conformable.

Conspicuity marking (DOT-C2)

Red-and-white retroreflective tape that makes trucks and trailers visible at night. 3M Diamond Grade 983 is marked DOT-C2 and, per 3M, meets FMVSS 108 when applied to spec.

Durability rating

A maker's expected or warranted outdoor life for a film. Every rating has a basis: climate zone, vertical or horizontal surface, printed or unprinted. Ratings from different makers don't compare directly.

Edge lift

A film edge pulling away from the surface. Common causes are skipped post-heat, too much tension and poor surface prep.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does cast mean in car wrap vinyl?

Cast vinyl is made by pouring a liquid PVC mix onto a casting sheet and baking off the solvent. The film forms with almost no built-in stress, so it's thin and stretches into curves without shrinking back. It's the standard film for full wraps.

What is post-heating a wrap?

Post-heating means bringing stretched areas, recesses and edges of an installed wrap up to the film maker's set temperature, roughly 185 to 248°F depending on the film. It stops the film from shrinking back and lifting.

What does mil mean for vinyl thickness?

A mil is a thousandth of an inch, or 25.4 micrometers. Cast print film is about 2 mil thick. Color-change film is about 3 to 4.5 mil with adhesive, and 3M's paint protection film is 7.5 to 9 mil.

What is an overlaminate on a car wrap?

It's a clear film applied over a printed wrap. It sets the finish, such as gloss or matte, and protects the ink from UV, scratches, washing and chemicals. Color-change film normally doesn't need one.

What's the difference between a full wrap and a partial wrap?

At Ardor, a full wrap covers every painted surface, including body panels, doors and tailgate. A partial wrap covers about half the vehicle and blends into the paint color. Spot graphics and lettering are smaller options.

What is knifeless tape?

It's an installer's tool: a filament tape laid down before the film goes on. Pulling the filament cuts the vinyl from underneath, so no blade touches the paint.
